ST BONIFACE. Among 529's distinctions is Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence, bestowed for the restaurant's inventory of over 18,000 bottles. Housed in an elegant 1912 mansion, it's also one of the finest for patio dining. The carpaccio is top notch, as you'd expect, but for something a little different, start with grilled beef sausage with coriander chutney or maple-smoked steelhead trout. Then, in traditional steakhouse style, your waiter presents a tray from which you select your preferred cut of Canada Prime grade beef. Rack of lamb, veal and fresh fish are also available, and just as good. Sides are sized to share ­ try the sweet potato mash with maple-pecan butter.

The patio was Winnipeg's first, and continues to be among its best ­ if the weather is nice, you'll definitely want to try for a table outside. Inside, the décor is colorful but a bit rustic, comfortable and festive. The dining room is full of families in the early evening hours, but the bar stays lively well into the night as folks sip ice cold beers and frosty margaritas. The food menu runs the gamut of Tex-Mex favorites, from burritos and enchiladas to nachos and some of the absolute tastiest wings in town.
