Held in Merchant's Square, this farmer's market helps continue Williamsburg's traditional role of being a gathering place for the community as well as a center of regional trade and commerce. Indeed, as you walk past this collection of white tents and stands, you'll see (and smell) cut flowers, organic produce, beeswax candles, coffee beans, fresh seafood and even homemade pies. In addition to the merchants, the market also books live music and, from time to time, local chefs who share secrets of the trade.

With the oldest juried invitational art exhibit in Virginia, AOFTA is limited to 100 artists, performers and craftspeople. Few cities in the US celebrate the yuletide season quite like Williamsburg does, as the month of December offers no shortage of great, family-friendly activities and events. Things start with the Grand Illumination and culminate with the annual New Year's Eve fireworks display. In between, concerts, recitals, theatrical performances, wine dinners, celebrity chef-hosted breakfasts, and guided walking tours help make December in Williamsburg a time you'll never forget. Fireworks displays and, of course, the Christmas Eve tree lighting in Market Square add to the festive atmosphere. Some events -- the Grand Illumination, for example -- are free to the public, but admission is charged for entrance into Colonial Williamsburg.

Christmas in Williamsburg is magical, and the season kicks off with the annual Grand Illumination. The first Sunday in December, more than 30,000 people take to the streets of Colonial Williamsburg for music, candlelight tours, a military tattoo and fireworks. Tickets are admission to Colonial Williamsburg, but most of the fun takes place in the streets free of charge. This has been a local tradition for several years now; if you are in town, don't miss it!

The Bard may not have discovered the New World, but it certainly has discovered him with the many festivals and "in the park" series that have sprung up all over the US and Canada in recent years. Here in Williamsburg, a tradition that started way back in 1753 -- when London's Hallam Troupe put on a production of "The Merchant of Venice in Williamsburg" -- was picked up in the late 1970s and continues today thanks to the effort and hard work of William & Mary's Department of Theatre, Speech and Dance. The festival generally includes three productions and a youth drama camp.
