Perhaps Virginia Beach's favorite annual event, the Neptune Festival features an array of sports and cultural events throughout the month of September, culminating in the big boardwalk weekend blowout. Sporting events include a triathlon, midnight bicycle ride, an 8K run, and a 5K walk, plus surfing, volleyball, and cheerleading competitions. The arts are represented by a sand sculpting competition, an art and craft show, several concerts, grand balls and dances, a seafood fair, a parade, and fireworks.

Held each year over the Labor Day weekend, the American Music Festival attracts large crowds and top musicians. Concerts and family friendly activities are held at venues all over town (headliners perform at the 5th Street Stage), and the weekend is also highlighted by the Rock 'n' Roll Half-Mile Marathon. Featured performers have included modern rockers like the Goo Goo Dolls as well as classic acts ranging from the Commodores, Isaac Hayes, and Three Dog Night to Foreigner and Kansas.
