Waverly started out in 1926 as a tuberculosis hospital. At the time, TB was rampant, especially in the southern US, and people afflicted with the disease suffered lengthy and painful periods of convalescence. If they survived at all, that is. Because antibiotics were unknown, TB was frequently fatal, and Waverly had its fair share of deaths. No records remain, but thousands upon thousands of people died here. Closed as a TB hospital in 1961, Waverly reopened shortly thereafter as a geriatric care center but was subsequently ordered closed in the early 1980s due to patient abuse. Reportedly haunted!

This amazing outdoor exhibit of Victorian architecture consists of churches, museums, bed and breakfast inns, schools and universities, parks and, of course, thousands of grand homes. BUTCHERTOWN. Created in the 19th century on the grounds of a former farm, this pastoral cemetery was designed to take advantage of the land's natural undulations and picturesque features. Today, it's a lovely, landscaped area with a serene ambience. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it's the site of many graves of well-known locals, including those of General George Rogers Clark, Harland Sanders of KFC fame, journalist Henry Watterson, and James Guthrie. At the time of its completion, the 287-foot spire was the tallest in North America. Remarkable architecture and ornate trappings make this a most beautiful cathedral. Self-guided tours can be conducted during the open hours when services are not taking place, and guided tours can be scheduled for groups of 10 or more.

BUTCHERTOWN. Built around 1850, this residence was Edison's home from 1866 to 1867. It offers a fantastic glimpse at his impact on history, science, and communication, especially since much of the work that earned him 1,093 patents is on display. Hands-on exhibits include rare artifacts related to Edison's invention of the light bulb, the movie projector, and the phonograph, as well as his enhancement of the telegraph and telephone.
