DOWNTOWN. When Mobile's historic Saenger Theatre opened in January 1927, it did so to great public fanfare and was quickly hailed as the "most beautiful playhouse in all of Dixie." Indeed, in its heyday, the 2000-seat, European-style theater was as big a spectacle as the shows it hosted, and folks clamored in to "ooh and aah" at its opulent, palace-like interior (the Greek ornamentations are especially breathtaking). These days, the Saenger is enjoying a renaissance, having been updated in 2000 to accommodate modern audiences and shows. There are few better ­ or more intimate ­ places to catch a show in the city of Mobile.

DOWNTOWN. The state-of-the-art Mobile Civic Center hosts a wide range of special events and activities throughout the year. In actuality, the Civic Center is comprised of three separate structures (the 10,000-seat Arena, 2000-seat Theater, and 28,000-sq. ft. Exposition Hall), allowing the city to offer everything from trade shows and the International Festival to theater performances, concerts, NCAA Division I athletic tournaments, and monster truck rallies.
