PERRYSBURG. Fort Meigs is the largest walled fortification in the United States. William Henry Harrison ordered his troops to build this fort, located on the south side of the Maumee River, in 1812, and it was the site of two important battles during the War of 1812. Restoration and archaeological excavation of the site began in the 1960s, and the project was completed in 1975. Self-guided tours and demonstrations available.

WEST END. This is one of the few memorials in Toledo that reminds us that this city was named after Toledo, Spain, a small city right outside of Madrid. This grassy area off Collingwood Avenue, which looks more like a grassy median than a plaza, greets you at the fringe of the Historic West End neighborhood. A nice place to have a picnic lunch if you are walking or driving through the West End.

WAREHOUSE DISTRICT. A must-see stop in Toledo, a city that is known as "The Glass Capital of the World," is the Libbey Glass Factory Outlet. Upon entering, you'll see a small display to the left that chronicles the history of this company. In 1870, William L. Libbey joined the New England Glass Company, which was founded in 1818. When, in 1888, the company moved its operation to Toledo, they renamed it the "Libbey Glass Company." Libbey had worked in glass plants since he was 10 years old, and even developed the first automatic glass-making machine. Today, Libbey is the leading producer for glass tableware and ceramic dinnerware for the North American food service industry, and it exports glass products to 100 countries. It was also the cornerstone for some of the other leading producers of glass products in the world such as Owens-Illinois and Owens-Corning.

WEST END. Step into the West End of Toledo, located near downtown, and you'll be stepping straight into the 1800s. Huge Victorian homes surround you. Although some have not been kept up very well, you can still get a taste for the wealth and power the neighborhood once had. Be sure to drive or walk down Parkwood, Maplewood and Collingwood Avenues. This neighborhood is on the opposite side of Monroe Street from the Toledo Museum of Art, and it's best to visit during the day.

NEAR WEST END. Quietly located in a residential area west of downtown, this Plateresque (a 16th century Spanish architectural style) cathedral is unique in North America. It is beautiful and massive ­ an anomaly for its location in an understated neighborhood. Inside, there are mosaic altars, paintings, wall frescoes all the way to the ceilings and a fabulous stained glass rose window. This cathedral is the seat of the Catholic Church for the Diocese of Toledo.

FREMONT. Located 35 minutes outside of Toledo, this Presidential Center is definitely worth the trip. This building, circa 1916, was the nation's first Presidential museum and library and became the model for future Presidential museums. Here, you'll be able to enjoy two floors of President Hayes's belongings, documents, Gilded Age items and Native American history. While you're here, be sure to check out Hayes' 31-room Victorian home, which still contains the original family furniture and decorations.
