About Rome

Although it may not have the storied past of its namesake, Rome, Georgia, has carved out its own charming niche with unique landmarks, intriguing museums, and a tourist-friendly historic district. Adding to its character, Rome is surrounded by the Etowah, Oostanaula and Coosa Rivers, and the area circumscribed by them - aptly named Between the Rivers - is where the city was founded in 1834. The advent of the railroad brought prosperity to Rome until Sherman burned much of the city during his Civil War march to Atlanta. However, citizens found the fortitude to rebuild the historic downtown area, creating what is arguably the finest Victorian city center in Georgia, complete with a 1901 train depot, antique shops, art galleries, restaurants, homes and churches. Overlooking the entire area is Rome's official symbol, a beautiful brick clock tower. Built in 1871 atop one of Rome's seven hills, the structure was originally designed to hold the city's water supply. Today, it houses a museum that documents Rome's history and showcases an observation deck that affords enchanting, panoramic views of the region.
