VICTORVILLE. During the Golden Age of the automobile, Route 66 was America's first Great Highway, a famed roadway linking the east and west. Today, much of it has either fallen into disrepair, suffers from lack of use, or no longer exists at all. Still, the legend of Route 66 continues, thanks to institutions like this museum, which opened in 1995. The building, once the Red Rooster Cafe, features a gallery of classic photos and scenes from the Route's heyday. In addition, a research library, gift shop, and scores of brochures, maps, and traveler-friendly items are available.
