About Queensbury

Queensbury began as a Quaker settlement in 1763 and has since become a leader in the development of Warren County, New York. Located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, Queensbury was once a part of the great northern wilderness. The Iroquois valued the area for bountiful hunting and fishing during the summer months. During the French and Indian War, this area became an important route for the Colonial Army, and after the war the English Lt. Governor James DeLancy encouraged settlers to establish a township. The Quakers were among the first settlers, and began expanding their community with frame houses and roads, bringing with them new settlers. In 1824, a small quarrying operation opened the area to world markets and the settlement continued to expand. By the 1870s, agriculture was firmly established in the region, and became a major area of trade. Today, Queensbury is still prized for its natural beauty, yet is also known for its growing tourism trade. Serving thousands of tourists each year, motels, restaurants, amusement parks, golf courses and ski trails continue to flourish, showcasing Queensbury as a charming, tourist-friendly town.

Did you know?

Following the French and Indian War, Queensbury was established as a Quaker settlement in 1763 by a group of settlers led by Abraham Wing. Their meetinghouse, school and burial ground was near the modernday intersection of Bay and Quaker Roads. The cemetery, containing the graves of about 80 of the early pioneers, was used until about 1810.
