About Pottsville
Pottsville is a small, yet fiercely proud community with deep roots that trace back to the days of anthracite coal mining. The town weathered the coal mining boom and bust of the early 1800's and thrives today. Pottsville prides itself on its lovely architecture and preservation of history via monuments and museums. Visitors should not leave this city without taking a walking tour to view the eye catching murals that dot the city and the lovely old churches that line the streets. Many of the murals are painted on buildings located on or very near Centre Street. Mural themes include the city's mining past and other topics relating to local history. Also located on Centre Street, Trinity Episcopal Church is the city's oldest church and features beautiful architectural detail. The United Presbyterian Church and St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church feature stunning stained glass windows. The Henry Clay Monument and the Garfield Square Monuments give insight into the city's economic past and Civil War involvement. The Jewish Museum of Eastern Pennsylvania, located on Mahantongo Street, chronicles the history of the Jewish community in the area while Jerry's Classic Cars and Collectibles Museum boasts an exciting collection of antique wheels. The Yuengling Brewery is also an interesting stop as it's reported to be the nation's oldest. Before heading out of Pottsville though, every visitor should make a stop at the Garfield Diner, a classic old-timey diner that's been showcased on an American Diner documentary created by PBS.
Did you know?
A Pottsville native bears the grisly distinction of being the first person to shed blood during the Civil War. As Pottsville troops traveled to Washington, D. C., an African-American by the name of Nicholas Biddle accompanied the regiment of infantry troops and was hit in the head by a citizen sympathetic to the South's agenda.
