About Platteville

Nestled in the countryside of southwestern Wisconsin, Platteville is a bucolic town with a storied past. The town was named for the large pots Native American tribesmen used to smelt lead, called "plats." Education has always been an important part of the community as symbolized by Platteville Academy, a circa-1839 school and home to one of the state's first educational institutions. Today, the school houses the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, part of the state university system and home to more than 5,000 students who add vibrancy to the area. Both visitors and townspeople enjoy a vital local arts program and a range of outdoor activities that entertain in both warm and cold-weather months. Local museums highlight the history of the town, including the Mitchell-Rountree Cottage, a period home which dates from the early-18th century. Mining was an important part of the early Platteville economy and this industry is exemplified at the Mining Museum and Rollo Jamison Museum. Located on the 1845 Bevans Lead Mine, the mining tour features an authentic mine train ride and exhibits of life in the early settlement.

Did you know?

Platteville pays homage to its mining past by displaying the world's largest letter "M," constructed from limestone. The letter represents the first mining school in the United States that was founded in the town. The giant "M" is located on the original Platteville Mound and is a point of pride for townsfolk.
