About Talladega
Talladega, pop 15,000, is situated 40 miles east of Birmingham, and is probably best known for its Speedway. But the area has a long and interesting history all its own. Although it had been settled by Native Americans long before, the area wasn't recorded until 1540, when Hernando DeSoto visited. DeSoto had close contact with a number of thriving Native American tribes, who had been cultivating the land to grow corn and other crops for many years. Unfortunately, when a member of DeSoto's team returned 20 years later, he found the native populations decimated by common European diseases, and they never fully recovered. Some of this history has been traced at the nearby DeSoto Caverns, one of the earliest recorded cave systems in the US, and a popular tourist attraction. Cheaha State Park is also in the vicinity, boasting the highest point in the state atop Cheaha Mountain, as well as an array of options for campers and hikers. Near Courthouse Square is Davey Allison Memorial Park, which features a fountain dedicated to the much-loved driver, as well as the Talladega/Texaco Walk of Fame. The biggest local attractions, of course, are the Talladega Speedway and the adjacent International Motorsports Hall of Fame & Museum. The speedway is open daily for tours, which include a ride around the track, while the museum showcases over 100 important racing vehicles. Talladega hosts the Busch Series Aaron's 312 and the Nextel Cup Series Aaron's 499 in April, and the Nextel Cup Series EA Sports 500 in October.
