About Ontario

Ontario, California is in the heart of an expansive suburban area east of Los Angeles known as the Inland Empire. Detractors cite the region's unbridled urban sprawl, but to most of its four million residents, the "IE" provides a laid-back lifestyle that blends the rural American West with culturally diverse, cosmopolitan amenities. Ontario, with its bustling international airport, high-tech convention center and state-of-the-art sports arena, anchors the western half of the Inland Empire. These world-class facilities position Ontario as the prime business address in the region, and fuel the rapid growth of the city, which currently has approximately 175,000 residents. Long before the 737s were lining up to land here, however, the 50 square miles that now comprise Ontario were blanketed with olive and citrus groves, as well as vineyards. Some still exist today, giving the city a rural flavor that is increasingly rare in Southern California. The legendary Route 66, now Foothill Boulevard, introduced America to this area in the first half of the 20th century, but the San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) ushered in the explosive growth of the second half of the century. From its modest beginnings as a rest stop on the way to L.A., Ontario has become a bona fide destination for millions every year, offering visitors a wide variety of dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities.

Did you know?

Car Crazy. Southern Californians love their cars, and nowhere is that more true than in the Inland Empire, a region that owes its existence to highway construction. The traffic volumes on Ontario's freeways are enormous. The San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) carries more than 260,000 cars through the city every day, while the Ontario Freeway (I-15) clocks approximately 225,000 trips per day. These numbers may give local residents headaches, but they reflect the emergence of Ontario as a major urban center.
