Music and dancing, a climbing wall, 5K and fun runs, carnival rides and a midway, a dachshund parade and races, face painting and more make this festival a blast for the whole family. Of course you can't have Oktoberfest without beer, and you'll find plenty of it here, from Germany and the rest of the world. There's also an abundance of traditional German foods like schnitzel, apple strudel, bratwurst, and spaetzle. If you plan to eat and drink (and really, why go to Oktoberfest if you're not going to drink and eat?), be sure to purchase coupons. Most food and beverage choices require 3-8 coupons.

Founded in 1986 as a weekend devoted to video as creative art, the Dallas Video Festival today is a celebration of the moving image. It's not a film festival, and it doesn't draw big Hollywood actors and filmmakers, but it does attract a wide variety of extraordinarily creative and gifted artists from around the globe. The audience, comprised of the same sort of interesting and dynamic folks, grows every year. In addition to the various video presentations, there are panels and workshops. Events are at two venues: the Angelika Film Center and the Dallas Theater Center.

Each year from late September to early October, more than three million people attend this excellent fair, making it one of the largest annual expositions in North America. The event features amusement rides, livestock shows, art competitions, and outdoor musical events. Fair Park, the 277-acre site, is itself a National Historic Landmark and has been hosting the fair since 1886.

Dozens of dealers sell collectibles and comics new and old. It's the best place to find that Millenium Falcon your parents didn't buy you as a kid.

The Trains at Northpark Center Mall is an annual tradition dating back over twenty years. Located in a court between Neiman Marcus and Barney's New York, over thirty miniature trains run through an impressive model landscape depicting some of America's greatest landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Rushmore, Washington D.C., and Times Square. In addition, local artists volunteer their talents to custom paint miniature train cars that can be purchased as keepsakes. The Ronald McDonald House of Dallas is the beneficiary of funds raised from sales of the cars and admission tickets. Lines can be long during the Christmas shopping season, but it is well worth the wait.

Held the first Saturday in December, this Christmas extravaganza features holiday floats, antique cars, bands, large inflatable balloons and an appearance by Santa Claus. A children's activity area and vendor booths will be set up in City Hall Plaza. The weather usually is mild but chilly, and though crowds are large, finding a good spot along the parade route is fairly easy. For the best view possible, call ahead to reserve bleacher seats in the grandstand near the Adolphus Hotel.

This massive festival sprawls throughout Fair Park -- a celebration of all things Celtic! Dozens of local, national and international bands play traditional Irish ballads, instrumentals, modern rock and pub songs; dance troupes showcase their talents; and roaming entertainers make everyone smile. Food and beverage vendors offer up a bounty of traditional Irish goodies as well as Irish beer and Texas fair favorites; at other booths you'll find arts and crafts and Irish and Scottish imports. You'll see lots of folks wearing kilts, and dogs are welcome (as long as you keep them on a leash and clean up after them).
