About Lansing

In 1837, when state leaders selected a small township nestled at the confluence of the Grand and Red Cedar Rivers as the state capital, fewer than 10 registered voters lived here. From these humble beginnings, Lansing quickly became one of the Wolverine State's most dynamic social and political centers. By the late 19th century, the capitol was completed and an intrepid local, R. E. Olds, completed his latest invention: a three-wheel vehicle powered by a steam engine. Over the years, the auto industry has stood as Lansing's lifeblood, making it the "Car Capital of North America."
