About Kearney
Located at the nation's midpoint, equidistant from Boston and San Francisco, Kearney's history as a travelers' rest began as pioneers and settlers followed early trails across the continent during the 1800s. Nearby Fort Kearny (c1848) protected pioneers, prospectors and railroad crews. The unique Harold Warp Pioneer Village chronicles America's progress and development since 1830 with live demonstrations and over 50,000 historical items. Today, the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument spans I-80, and celebrates the pioneers' westward journey and the opening of the nation. Interactive exhibits allow visitors to share the experience. The area is also known for travelers of a different kind in the spring - the Platte River in Kearney becomes a rest stop for some 500,000 migrating sand hill cranes and other birds on their way north to Alaska and Canada.
Did you know?
The location of the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument coincides with where three great western trails converged - the Oregon, Mormon and California trails all passed through here, and nearly 300,000 settlers passed this way during the mid-1800s. Later, the routes were used by the Pony Express, Wells Fargo stagecoaches, and the Transcontinental Railroad, and formed the base for what is today a busy interstate highway.
