A Closer Look - Plant Photography by Susan Larkin
Nov 1, 2011 - Dec 31, 2012
Brian C. Nevin Welcome Center
1 Plantations Rd
+1 (607) 255-8618

Local photographer, Susan Larkin’s, fascination with plants is brought to life in her display, “A Closer Look,” a collection of black and white photographs which reveal the often unnoticed shapes and textures of plants up close. Every detail of each plant is in clear focus, resulting from the combination of multiple exposures of the same subject - each taken with a different focal point. The images are then combined by a process called focus stacking and the finished photographs are all monochrome images.

All photographs in this exhibit are of plants that are found around Cornell.

Dawn’s Early Light: The First Fifty Years of American Photography
Nov 17, 2011 - May 4, 2012
Cornell University
Carl A. Kroch Library, Level 2B, Hirshland Gallery
+1 607-255-3530

Cornell University Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections invites you to an exhibition about the first half-century of photography in America, from its invention in Europe in 1839 through the 1880's. During this period, photography was transformed from an expensive and cumbersome novelty into a universal medium that allowed for a shared American experience.

Photography changed the course of American history. It provided the window through which citizens observed the Civil War and Westward expansion. The new visual medium gave Americans a more intimate view of far-away people and places, and a sense of greater connection to their fellow citizens and national leaders. This exhibition presents a selection of photographs and related artifacts about the technological development of photography during its first fifty years.

The materials on view represent highlights from a magnificent gift to Cornell University by The Loewentheil Family Photographic Collection.
