About Beckley

The quaint village of Beckley is located in Southern West Virginia, and is the largest city in Raleigh County, the economic and social hub of the region. The town's Main Street features a lovely historic district, walking tours and ample shopping and dining opportunities. Coal mining has always been an important industry for the region with the town calling itself "The City with a Mine of Its Own." Beckley's Exhibition Coal Mine offers a historic look at the development of the life and culture of towns both inside and outside the mines. The exhibition features a late-18th century coal tour and miner's village, with a ride in a working mine car giving visitors a firsthand view of an actual mine. For arts and crafts lovers, TAMARACK, West Virginia's largest showcase of handicrafts and culinary flavor, is just minutes away from Beckley. Nature lovers delight in the region's resplendent wildlife and outdoor activities. Nearby Winterplace Ski Resort is a favorite for wintertime adventures and Beckley's Fitzpatrick Park is a popular spring and summertime destination. Lake Stephens Park is also a choice locale for camping and horseback riding along the 300-acre Lake Stephens and throughout the surrounding parkland.

During the American Civil War, Beckley (then Beckleyville) saw a great deal of action and military maneuvers. Several Civil War monuments around the city honor those who fought and died in the conflict. Civil War markers are placed on historic Courthouse Square, the Davis Cottages, Hull and Keffer Houses and Wildwood. The town also maintains a Union Cemetery.
