About Stevens Point

Centrally located in the heart of Wisconsin along the Wisconsin River Valley, Stevens Point is well-regarded as a place of rich history and natural beauty. The town was named for settling logger George Stevens, the original signer of the Lumberman's Treaty with the Menominee Indians. The 19th century agreement allowed logging and milling on the land and Stevens built a small dwelling, which became the forbear of Stevens Point. The city hosts several local events each year, including the Festival of the Arts, an exhibition and sale of work from more than 50 Midwestern artists. Scenery is another important part of local life as demonstrated by the 220-acre Schmeeckle Reserve, a natural preserve for local flora and fauna that is located on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus. Indigenous customs are also preserved, notably in the Mathias Mitchell Public Square - Main Street District which is home to a number of restored downtown buildings. The District provides an excellent backdrop for a walking tour of the area. Industry is an important part of city life and is well-represented by the popular Stevens Point Brewery. The Brewery was founded in 1857 and remained privately owned until several years ago.

Did you know?

Nature lovers who venture to Stevens Point delight in the Green Circle State Trail, a locally-managed 24-mile nature loop through the Wisconsin and Plover River valleys. The tour showcases the regions geographical beauty as well as the workings of a large local "pinery," native and pioneer settlements, and illuminating river folklore.
