HISTORICAL SITES

Galloway House & Village
The 30-room mansion was the "farmhouse" of the Galloway family for three generations. Purchased from Salim Newton as a simple but decorative house, the Galloways built ornate additions to turn the house into a showplace of gracious living and entertaining. The hand-carved woodwork, etched glass, and hand-stenciled ceilings are a few of the marvels of the lifestyle of a bygone era. Each building of the village is its own step-back-in-time from a country church and one-room schoolhouse to a grist mill and more.

Named in honor of a famous Menominee Indian chief, Oshkosh was first developed in 1836 by settlers who built homes on the shore of Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin's largest inland lake. Today, the burgeoning city is home to business and manufacturing interests, and it boasts a rich cultural and historic heritage. The beautiful Paine Art Center, housed in a restored Tudor-style manor, displays historic furnishings and art. The Grand Opera House has been fully restored to its late 19th-century splendor, and Oshkosh's symphony orchestra plays a five-concert season there each year. Naturalists enjoy nearby Menominee Park and Zoo, the bordering Fox River and Lake Butte des Morts. Students from Fox Valley Technical College and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh add youth and vigor to the city's activities and contribute to a bustling social scene. Like many lakeside neighbors, the city of 63,000 enjoys a vast array of outdoor activities in every season, including biking, hiking, boating and skiing.

The lumber trade helped Oshkosh's early economy get established, and today, remnants of its "wooden dynasties" enrich the city's cultural scene. In fact, three houses built for early lumber barons are in community use today. The John Rogers Morgan House (1884) has been completely renovated and is open to tours. Edgar Sawyer's home is now the Oshkosh Public Museum, and Nathan Paine's home now the Paine Art Center is available for tours, art classes and musical performances.
