About Norfolk

Part of the Hampton Roads region of Eastern Virginia, Norfolk is a vibrant commercial and naval port community that's home to more than 230,000 people. Norfolk sits at the point where the Elizabeth River spills into Hampton Roads Bay, and this sheltered setting made it an ideal port for the European settlers who founded the city back in 1682. Even now, the US Navy recognizes the area's strategic importance, operating the largest naval bases in the world (and the entire Atlantic fleet) out of Naval Station Norfolk. It's not surprising, then, that many of Norfolk's top attractions are maritime-themed, including Nauticus, The National Maritime Center. Norfolk's shopping and dining scenes are primarily clustered downtown along the waterfront and in the older, more established neighborhoods like the Ghent District. A center for transportation and higher education as well, Norfolk is also home to the region's international airport, the Norfolk-Southern Railway, Old Dominion University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Norfolk State University.

Did you know?

Most people regard Norfolk as a "Navy Town." But with three four-year institutions of higher learning, it's also a college town. Old Dominion University, Virginia Wesleyan College, and Norfolk State University are all located within the city.
