About McAllen

Located in Hidalgo County on the southernmost tip of Texas, McAllen is a dynamic, multicultural community. The area boasts a strong economic base, a semitropical climate and a number of shopping, dining and sightseeing opportunities. Its close proximity to the Mexican towns of Reynosa and Nuevo Progreso make it an ideal home base for touring places south of the border. The city features several historic buildings worth seeing, including the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot and the First United Methodist Church. As with many places in South Texas, McAllen is a great bird-watching destination. Tropical birds, colorful butterflies and other wildlife can be spotted at nearby Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge; meanwhile, Anzalduas Park and Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park provide ample opportunity for picnicking, boating and trail-walking. For artsy types, McAllen International Museum displays a variety of works in different media, focusing on Mexico's handmade arts and crafts. To get real-life experience with the area's past, ride the hand-drawn Los Ebanos Ferry, which traverses the Rio Grande. You can ride in your car (only three cars per trip) or assist the crew in pulling the rope that powers the ferry across the river!

Did you know?

Prior to the 1920s, one of the major problems facing the Rio Grande Valley was banditos (believed to be affiliated with the legendary Pancho Villa) who ventured into Texas and raided ranches and towns each year. As a result of the raids, the US government stationed some 12,000 soldiers in McAllen in 1916 - the city's first population boom.
