Harlingen is located in the middle of the semi-tropical Rio Grande Valley, in the southernmost part of the great state of Texas near the Gulf Coast. Harlingen provides easy access to the stunning beaches of South Padre Island and serves as a gateway for trips to Mexico. As with many places in south Texas, this city is a great bird watching destination. Tropical birds as well as butterflies are abundant in many nearby areas, including the Great Texas Birding Trail, the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, and the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. In downtown Harlingen, Jackson Street, with numerous shops filled with old-fashioned collectible goodies, is known as the "Antique Capital" of the Rio Grande Valley. To get an overview of the downtown area, take a walking tour through the business district where you'll pass several scenic murals painted on buildings. To step back in time and learn more about area history, visit the Rio Grande Valley Museum, which has a variety of displays involving natural and economic history. Did you know?
A town by any other name...Harlingen has been known by a variety of names throughout its history. The earliest settlers dubbed it "Rattlesnake Junction," more than likely because of the "occupants" that inhabited the region. By 1906, the town had acquired the nickname of "Six Shooter Junction" due to the number of Rangers, Customs Officers, and gun-toting civilians that lived here. However, the Dutch name of Harlingen finally stuck, as the area's irrigation canals reminded residents of Holland's waterways.
