Founded as an outpost for traders, Thompson experienced rapid growth and development half a century ago when nickel deposits were discovered underground. Inco Limited, a mining interest, inked a deal with the Manitoba government to build mining facilities, infrastructure and town services for miners who moved to the region. The development was named for then-Chairman of Inco, John Thompson. In 1970, Queen Elizabeth II presided over the incorporation of the town to city status. Today, Thompson is the largest city in Northern Manitoba, often called "The Hub of the North," and a center of trade and commerce for residents of smaller surrounding villages. Because of its proximity to vast nature areas of the country, outdoor activities are extremely popular in the region, with sports like hockey, curling and skiing keeping spectators entertained year-round. The most famous sight in the city and a source of great pride for residents is the massive wolf mural that adorns the tallest building in the region and is the largest photomural in Canada. The mural is part of the under-construction Spiritway, a walking and biking route that will showcase 18 points of interest in Thompson and will begin at the Heritage North Museum and end at the Centre for Aboriginal Art.

Due to its location, Thompson experiences a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions throughout the year. From bitterly cold and snowy winters to temperate summers, the town enjoys seasonal climates. During colder months, average temperatures can plummet to a high of -3 degrees and lows average in the -20s in January. In the summer, the average high temperature is 72 degrees and the average low is 47 degrees.
