North Sioux City, South Dakota is one-third of the tri-state region known as "Siouxland, " which includes Sioux City, Iowa and South Sioux City, Nebraska. Located at the confluence of the Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers, the region was originally settled because the waterways allowed easy access for hunters and fur trappers. The river was also the path followed by Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery. In August 1804 the explorers were just south of the city when Sergeant Charles Floyd-the only member of the Corps to die during the journey-passed away from what is presumed to have been appendicitis. The group buried Floyd on top of a bluff and marked his grave with a simple cedar post. Through the years, the citizens of North Sioux City watched over Floyd's Grave, even moving the coffin when the Missouri River eroded what had come to be called Floyd's Bluff. Finally, on the 96th anniversary of Floyd's death, the cornerstone for The Floyd Monument was laid. Construction took a year to complete but today the monument stands an impressive 100-feet high, and is a continuing source of pride to the 2,000 residents of North Sioux City.

Look out Las Vegas! A half-mile area along North Sioux City's River Drive and Military Road is known as "the strip." Walk a short gangplank and you are on a casino-floating on the mighty Missouri River-where you can enjoy the most lavish legal gaming this side of Nevada.
