About Williamsport

Seat of Lycoming County, Williamsport holds a place of prominence along the banks of the Susquehanna River. Its civic development stems from the booming lumber industry of the early 20th century, which made millionaires of many entrepreneurs. In fact, near downtown, "Millionaires' Row" is a five-block stretch of Victorian mansions that illustrates the wealth of these lumber barons. Also in the area are restaurants, shops, pubs (including the award-winning Bullfrog Brewery), a community theater, and the Lycoming County Historic Museum. Many of these sites can be accessed via the city's reinstituted trolley system. Out at the river, the "Hiawatha" riverboat provides narrated tours of the Susquehanna. Of course, all of this city history and attraction provides a charming background for the city's fascination with baseball actually, Little League baseball, which was founded in Williamsport! In fact, the Little League World Series is still held here each August, and the Little League Museum tells the full story of the sport, chronicling its stats and providing tons of information. Outdoor enthusiasts should also note that the city is surrounded by approximately 300,000 acres of state lands, sheer heaven for nature lovers.

The culture of the American church owes a small debt to Williamsport citizens. As a result of their passion and spirituality, we have two classic, familiar songs. Reverend J. H. Hopkins, an Episcopal rector, composed "We Three Kings of Orient Are" for a Christmas program, and James M. Black, a Methodist church member, penned the rousing anthem "When the Saints Go Marching In."
