The natural beauty of western New York's Enchanted Mountains welcomes you to Olean. The city's history dates to the early 1800s when pioneers were seeking routes to the frontiers of Ohio and beyond. Olean's position at the headwaters of the Allegheny made it an initial destination for thousands of people, who began their westward migration by floating flat-bottomed boats down the Allegheny to the Ohio River. The river was also a highway of commerce for lumber great rafts of logs were floated to markets as far away as New Orleans. With railroads and the petroleum business, Olean was recognized as an industrial center in the early 1900s. Local history is documented at the Fannie Bartlett Historical House and Olean Point Museum. Just outside of Olean, you'll find the gigantic quartz rocks at Rock City Park, and St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, about five miles away.

The name Olean comes from the Latin word oleum, meaning oil. An oil spring in the area was the first discovery of petroleum in North America. The name was also given to the first baby born in the community, Olean Shepard, born May 22, 1807.
