Nevada prides itself today on its friendliness, in great contrast to a violent period in its history when the town was in the center of border warfare between the abolitionists and those favoring slavery in the Kansas Territory. The Bushwhacker Museum displays exhibits from this time period of history. With the closing of the Nevada State Hospital in the mid-1990s, and the economic challenges presented by the loss of this major employer, the city has intentionally worked to re-create itself as a "telecommunity" to help rebuild the local economy. Some of the former hospital property has been developed as a TeleCenter, providing interactive video classrooms, multimedia production facilities, and business training and support facilities. Small businesses and individuals are taking advantage of growth opportunities and the available electronic capabilities of this community oriented town.

When the new Vernon County seat was established in 1855, the name "Fair View" was proposed. It was soon discovered that there was already a post office with that name elsewhere in Missouri, so county clerk DeWitt Hunter suggested "Nevada," in remembrance of his time in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains.
