About Peoria

"Will it play in Peoria?" This famous slogan was first employed by vaudeville companies in the early 20th century and has been used by marketing companies, politicians, and ad agencies for years because Peoria has long been considered the average American community, thanks to its central location and demographics. In fact, legendary newsman Charles Kuralt once referred to Peoria as a town "in the middle of the state, in the middle of the country, in the middle of the world." However, this concept of being "in the middle" barely touches the surface. Peoria is a unique riverside community whose people enjoy a strong sense of civic pride and an even stronger propensity for treating visitors like long-lost friends - step into a place like Klusendorf's Steakhouse, and you'll quickly find proof. From the bustle of the business district to the scenic bluffs that overlook the Illinois River, and from terrific shopping centers like Northwoods Mall and The Shoppes at Grand Prairie to enchanting escapes like Jubilee College and Forest Park, Peoria offers a wealth of activities to suit just about anybody's taste. What's more, Peoria has rediscovered the benefits of its downtown area, particularly Water Street, where once-forgotten warehouses and stores have been renovated and taken over by scores of neat restaurants and shops. Is Peoria in the middle? Yes, but being in the middle in no way makes it average.

Did you know?

The first permanent structure built by Europeans in this part of Illinois was Fort Crevecoeur. Established in January of 1680 on a bluff that overlooks modern-day Peoria, it was begun by a group of men under the leadership of famed French explorer Robert LaSalle. However, the fort was abandoned just a year after its completion and was later pillaged and destroyed. Today, a monument erected by the Peoria Historical Society on Scenic Park Drive pays homage to Fort Crevecoeur.
