When you think of Urbana, think of the University of Illinois, which is its most prominent resident. This college town has approximately 36,400 residents and is the twin city to nearby Champaign. In fact, the university divides the two towns, and its ever-changing student and faculty presence has contributed to a highly educated community that cultivates big city amenities while maintaining small town charm. Visitors enjoy browsing collections at the Krannert Art and Spurlock Museums, and live entertainment abounds at the university's performing arts center and in a variety of local theater companies. Other attractions include Urbana's symphony orchestra and Orpheum Children's Science Museum. Local folks are inevitably University of Illinois sports fans, and they take great pride in their hometown teams. When they're not cheering at games, they can often be found swimming, fishing, boating, biking, and jogging at the county's 50-plus parks. Lake of the Woods County Park, an area favorite, is prized for its 26-acre lake.

Open from August through May on Wednesdays only, the Japan House on Lincoln Avenue provides an authentic brush with Eastern culture. Beautiful landscaping around the house includes a Zen rock garden, a Japanese tea garden and a strolling garden. The interior, meanwhile, features three distinct tea rooms wherein guests may participate in tea ceremonies. Reservations to do so must be made well in advance.
