About Waterloo

Waterloo, located on the Cedar River in the northeastern quadrant of the state, is a sophisticated city, the cultural center for much of northern Iowa. The fine arts are embraced through an active community theater and a symphony orchestra, while the natural world is showcased at the Waterloo Arboretum and through an extensive municipal trail system. The highlight of Waterloo's cultural life, however, is the Grout Museum District. Waterloo resident Henry Grout was a successful businessman and a state legislator who had a penchant for travel, who, byt the time of his death in 1932, had collected over 2,000 artifacts from around the world. This collection was the basis for the Grout Museum of History and Science. The Bluedorn Science Imaginarium opened in the early 1990s to offer additional, hands-on science exhibits. The decorative gem of the district is the Rensselaer Russell House, often cited as Iowa's most perfect example of Italianate architecture. The home is completely and accurately renovated to its 1890s appearance, and guided tours are offered.

Did you know?

The popularity of the movie "Saving Private Ryan" threatens to overshadow the tragic events that inspired that story. In November 1942 five brothers from Waterloo, Iowa enlisted in the Navy after learning that a family friend had been killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The brothers had one condition - they wanted to serve together. The "Fighting Sullivans" were assigned to the USS Juneau, a ship that was sunk at Guadalcanal. All five brothers were lost, prompting Congress to pass the "Sullivan Law" banning brothers from serving on the same ship. Waterloo has not forgotten these patriotic native sons. The Sullivan Brothers Veterans Museum and Research Center, slated for completion in 2004, will honor Iowa vets from the Civil War to the present.
