About Mason City

Sleepy Mason City, Iowa--population 30,000--has had several brushes with fame through the years. The Stockman House, completed in 1908, was Iowa's first and only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Prairie-style residence. Local leaders were so impressed with Wright's work that he was commissioned to design and build a hotel and a bank. Mason City's Park Inn Hotel became the inspiration for Tokyo's Imperial Hotel. On February 3, 1959 Mason City vaulted onto the front page of newspapers across the country, after rockers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper had played a concert at Mason City's Surf Ballroom, they boarded a small plane which crashed just outside of town, killing everyone on board. In 1962 "The Music Man" appeared on screens across the country and America learned all about River City, aka Mason City, the hometown of Music Man scribe Meredith Willson. Meanwhile, another native son was winning Emmy awards and gaining notoriety for his craft - puppetry. The height of Bill Baird's fame arrived with the marionette goatherd scene in 1964's "The Sound of Music." Many of Baird's puppets are still on display at the Charles H. MacNider Museum in Mason City.

Did you know?

In the early 1900s, up-and-coming architect Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to build a private residence, a bank, and a hotel in Mason City. Wright's Prairie Style architecture so enchanted locals that other families began planning houses in the same style. Wright and developer Joshua Melson originally conceived the idea of the Rock Crest-Rock Glen neighborhood, but architect Walter Griffin was brought in when Wright abandoned the project--and his family--to elope with his mistress. Luckily, the departure didn't harm the project in the least. Griffin envisioned a grouping of homes built around the perimeter of a conserved natural space, each house taking advantage of the view and each owner having access to a common creek and field. Today, Rock Crest-Rock Glen is still the largest such grouping of Prairie-style homes in the country.
