About Alpharetta

First home to traders who built the outpost New Prospect Camp Ground, Alpharetta was a stop along the Cherokee Trail between the mountains of North Georgia and the Chattahoochee River. The first colonists built a small tent community and erected a wooden schoolhouse at the turn of the 19th century. The land around New Prospect was ideal for farming and raising cotton. In 1857, the town was chartered as Alpharetta, or "first town" in Greek. Today, the charming North Atlanta suburb boasts a population of 54,000 residents and continues to experience unprecedented growth and development while maintaining the rich history of the region. Visitors to Alpharetta can enjoy world-class shopping, sightseeing and dining as well as experience early settler life in historic Crabapple, Downtown Alpharetta and Milton Log Cabin, the areas first building located on the grounds of the city's high school. Alpharetta is home to business and manufacturing interests and economic development is a source of jobs and civic pride for the flourishing North Georgia town. The county hosts monthly markets on Main Street as well as community events and arts and entertainment programs. Open-air adventurers will find solace in the nearby mountains and the trails and natural areas along the Chattahoochee and golf enthusiasts can tee up at one of many local courses.
