First home to traders who built the outpost New Prospect Camp Ground, Alpharetta was a stop along the Cherokee Trail between the mountains of North Georgia and the Chattahoochee River. The first colonists built a small tent community and erected a wooden schoolhouse at the turn of the 19th century. The land around New Prospect was ideal for farming and raising cotton. In 1857, the town was chartered as Alpharetta, or "first town" in Greek. Today, the charming North Atlanta suburb boasts a population of 54,000 residents and continues to experience unprecedented growth and development while maintaining the rich history of the region.
