About Columbus
As it was 200 years ago, Columbus is first and foremost, a river town! Founded in 1828 on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, it served as an important connector between the southern plantations and the international cotton industry. Bringing American dreams to fruition, it is the birthplace of the formula for Coca Cola and was home to RC Cola until the 1960's. Ideally located between the intersection of five major highways, it is the third largest city in Georgia. Southern hospitality is alive and well, it's "just the way we are down here."
Did you know?
Andersonville, formerly known as Camp Sumter, was the largest of many Confederate military prisons established during the Civil War. Built in 1864, more than 45,000 Union soldiers were kept here and 13,000 died from disease, poor sanitation, malnutrition, overcrowding or exposure to the elements - and the prison only existed for 14 months. Today, this National Historic Site is the only park to serve as a memorial to all Americans ever captured as Prisoners of War.
