Located in Columbia County, the Lake City area is growing and the region has long been considered Florida's Gateway. Lake City is a small town (population 10,000) and serves as a midpoint between Jacksonville and Tallahassee. The town is convenient to Ichetucknee Springs State Park as well as near Live Oak and White Springs, two other small towns rich in Floridian hospitality. Lake City and the surrounding area are renowned for their numerous rivers, lakes, and springs. Nature lovers can enjoy recreational activities such as canoeing, fishing, swimming, and diving. Other area attractions include the Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center, Big Shoals State Forest (the state's only whitewater rafting), Olustee Beach, and the Suwannee River. If a slow rural pace is what you seek, then Lake City is the ideal stop. Enjoy its pleasant temperatures (the annual average is 69 degrees with 75% humidity), the area's hospitality, and Lake City's natural beauty all accented by Spanish moss draped trees, blue skies, and fresh blue water.

Before becoming Lake City (officially in 1859), the town was known as Alligator. Because of the area's many waterways, its previous name may have seemed like a natural since the region's environmental habitats were (and still are) a haven for bass, brim, catfish, beaver, otter, deer, armadillos, and yes alligators.
