Each September, more than 500,000 spectators and 2100 vintage automobiles gather in this Southern California town (along famed Route 66) for the Rendezvous, an event that breathes new life into the "sleepy bedroom community" 60 miles east of LA and 110 miles northeast of San Diego. However, as savvy travelers are learning, San Bernardino deserves more than an annual fly-by since the city is within a short driving distance of the Pacific Ocean, scenic desert areas, dramatic mountain peaks, the bright lights of Vegas, and everything from Sunset Strip and Rodeo Drive to Palm Springs and Disneyland. California's Inland Empire, an area that includes San Bernardino and nearby Riverside, was "founded" in the 1950s in hopes of giving identity to the area east of sprawling Los Angeles. Today, the Inland Empire boasts a style and attitude all its own. The region is home to popular winter retreats like Rim Nordic Ski Area, Snow Summit, Bear Mountain, Big Bear Lake, and Lake Arrowhead, many of which also appeal to hikers, campers, and other outdoorsy types during the summer and spring. In addition, the city of nearly 200,000 people offers a variety of dining and shopping options for visitors who want to stay close to town.

During the days of western expansion, San Bernardino was a popular port of call for folks who had just crossed, or were planning to cross, the Mohave Desert. Needless to say, it took a special breed of man (and woman) to make the journey, and at any one time, a frontier outpost like San Bernardino was populated by no shortage of legendary characters. Among the noted historical figures who spent time in and around San Bernardino were explorer/adventurer Jebediah Smith, legendary desert guide Christopher "Kit" Carson, and lawman Wyatt Earp.
