Established in the late 19th century as a river crossing and site of a flour mill, Tempe was initially a center of agriculture and dairy farming. Its personality was forever altered when the government located a teachers' college within its boundaries; that school is now the prestigious Arizona State University. Expectedly, Tempe's character is that of a college town. Home to faculty members and students, it's a vibrant city with a wealth of cultural and athletic diversions. Mill Avenue, a pedestrian-friendly street lined with unique shops and friendly cafés, serves as its main drag. To the delight of sports fans, Tempe also hosts the Fiesta Bowl, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Anaheim Angels (during their spring training camp). Named after a Greek valley, it's no surprise that the city prizes academic and physical rigor as strongly as the ancients did.
