About Fayetteville

Arkansas's resort center, Fayetteville lies in the heart of the Ozark Mountains, a mere 30 miles from the Oklahoma state line. Its location affords it four distinct seasons and gives those who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors countless opportunities for play year-round. The city traces its roots back to the early 19th century, when a trapper named Frank Pierce first explored the area. By 1830, the city of Fayetteville was home to several pioneer families, a courthouse, and a post office. During the Civil War years, both Union and Confederate troops occupied Fayetteville at one time or another, and the downtown Headquarters House (circa 1853) stands as a reminder of the war's impact on the city and its residents. Today, this town of 67,000 enjoys a prominent role in the economic success of Northwestern Arkansas, boasting an unemployment rate significantly lower than the national norm and serving as the home base to Wal-Mart and J.B. Hunt Transport. Must-see sites include Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park, where more than 18,000 Union and Confederate soldiers fought a gruesome battle on 7 December 1862; Devil's Den State Park in the nearby Boston Mountains, where Devil's Den Cave and the Devil's Icebox offer plenty of opportunities for exploration; and the University of Arkansas, whose beloved Razorbacks compete in the Southeastern Conference against some of the country's most elite college athletes. In addition, visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the Fayetteville Trolley, a public transport system that crisscrosses the city's renovated downtown area, making stops at or near places like the Dickson Street Historic District, Fayetteville Square, Walton Arts Center, and the university.

Did you know?

Sooey! Sooey! Newcomers to the Fayetteville area may wonder what all the "hog talk" is that they hear day in and day out. No the city doesn't have some special fascination with pork; it's just that most of them are enamored with the University of Arkansas's athletic teams, nicknamed the Razorbacks.
