About Kingsland
Although Camden County has been settled since the 1700s (it's one of Georgia's original eight counties), Kingsland itself is relatively new to the scene, having been founded as a railroad stop in the 1890s. Today, the friendly little town enjoys good quality of life and a fair share of big-city amenities, including dozens of popular restaurants up and down the I-95 corridor. Located near the Florida state line, the close-knit town has a reputation for warmly welcoming out-of-towners and serving as a terrific home base for exploring the nearby Okefenokee Swamp. During the Labor Day weekend, Kingsland really springs to life, as people from all over the area stop in to savor the sights, sounds and flavors of the annual Catfish Festival, which has received numerous regional and statewide awards. Nearby St. Marys is the second-oldest town in the United States, and its historic waterfront district - with old homes and buildings, brick sidewalks and lovely flower beds - is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. If your idea of a daytrip includes nature, the area around Kingsland offers plenty of opportunities, from spending a day exploring the Cumberland Island National Seashore to visiting the popular beaches of Jekyll and St. Simons Islands.
Did you know?
Beginning in 1954, the US Army acquired land along the banks of Kings Bay to construct an overseas shipping terminal just in case they needed to send munitions or men overseas. The Army never placed the base on active status, so in 1978 it was turned over to the US Navy to be used as a site for its ballistic-missile submarine squadron. The Kings Island base first deployed the Navy's Ohio-class subs, and since 1989, it has also been home to Trident-class submarines.
