About Hot Springs
The "Valley of the Vapors," as it was known when first discovered by Hernando de Soto, was a popular destination long before Americans settled here. Travelers stopped to bathe in steaming springs naturally heated to 147 degrees and rumored to have magical healing powers. The city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, sprang up to service the growing number of visitors to the springs and the surrounding area. It became the first federally protected lands in our nation's history - later named Hot Springs National Park. The Downtown Historic District and famed Bathhouse Row wind through the center of the park, offering a look at the city's colorful history and the technology of early 20th-century bathing establishments. Surrounded by mountains, forests and hiking trails, the area presents endless opportunities for sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts year-round. Summer months shine with vacationers being treated to the five lakes of Arkansas's Diamond Lakes Region and the state's #1 tourist attraction - Magic Springs Theme Park. Not to be outdone, winter ushers in another season of excitement and thrills at Oaklawn Park, where the country's finest thoroughbred horses have run since 1905.
