About Hagerstown
As the sixth largest city in Maryland, forward-thinking Hagerstown is home to a booming population, a bustling, attractive downtown area and plenty of historically significant sites. Situated along the Winchester and Western, CSX and Norfolk Southern railroad lines and near the intersection of Interstates 81 and 70, the "Hub City" has long been considered Western Maryland's center of transit and commerce, seeing vast quantities of industrial and commercial supplies pass through its boundaries each year. When Jonathan Hager founded this town back in 1762, it began as a small 200-acre plot of land and quickly grew to be one of the largest cities in the state. As the seat of Washington County, Hagerstown was a major supply center during the Civil War years, and history-minded travelers come through here each year to stand on the grounds where Robert E. Lee and his men participated in several engagements of the legendary Gettysburg Campaign. These days, travelers visit Hagerstown for a variety of other reasons, eager to indulge in outdoor activities like hiking, biking and fishing along the Potomac River or ready to scour the racks at popular shopping destinations like Valley Mall and the Prime Outlets. It's not often that a city has a small town feel yet offers big city opportunities, and that's just what makes Hagerstown such a special place.
Did you know?
Now known as "Hub City" because of the large number of railroads and roads that serve the city, Hagerstown was once known as the "Home of the Flying Boxcar." Fairchild Aircraft was a booming industry in the city and the area's most prominent employer from the 1930's to the 1980's. The company was responsible for building a number of World War II aircrafts, including AT-21 trainers and C-82 cargo planes. Many of the original aircrafts are on display at the Hagerstown Aviation Museum.
