About Freeport

Freeport, located in Stephenson County, is rich in history. This Northwestern Illinois town is only home to about 27,000 people, but the area's natural beauty and charming personality keep visitors coming back. Freeport was the site of the Second Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and is home to the Old River School Historic District, which showcases the city's oldest home (built in 1838) as well as the 1885 wrought iron Van Buren Bridge. Ride the Stephenson Railroad Antique Steam Train for a four-mile glimpse of the county's natural charm - the route includes pristine farmland and a stretch above Yellow Creek. During the warmer months, Freeport is an ideal destination for hikers and campers, while the winter months see an influx of cross-country skiers and snowmobilers. Recreational areas include Oakdale Nature Preserve, Wetlands Preserve, and Krape Park, which even features an old-time carousel. Freeport is located on the Pecatonica River near Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Park, and was once a regular stagecoach stop for pioneers heading west.
