About Fredericksburg
The city of Fredericksburg is one of rich history, modern-day culture and a budding future. Now a quaint, historically-minded small town of around 20,000 people, Fredericksburg was initially developed as a frontier city of Virginia in the late 17th-century. By the early 1800's, it had eventually budded into a primary location that linked together Richmond, Virginia and Washington, D.C. In addition to acting as Washington's stomping grounds, Fredericksburg has seen many a battle in its time, including one of the most important fights during the Civil War, the Battle of Fredericksburg. Today, Fredericksburg is a historian's haven, allowing visitors to skip rocks over the Rappahannock River (the same river that George Washington grew up on) and visit the first President's childhood home, Ferry Farm. Be whisked away to another century as you visit cemeteries of fallen soldiers, military memorials and historic buildings, all standing as mementos of a by gone era. Now a suburban oasis for business commuters to D.C. and Richmond, Fredericksburg is coming into its own as one of the best small towns in the nation, and certainly a premier place to visit.
Did you know?
According to legend, John Smith, of Pocahontas fame, visited Fredericksburg as early as 1608. Smith is rumored to have said the area was "beautiful and inviting," leading some historians to believe that his opinion about the area could have led to its settlement. Smith's observations still stand true today, as the rolling hills and Rappahannock River combine to make a spectacular scene.
