It is hard to believe that just 35 minutes outside the city of Canton, a whole different world exists. Home to the largest Amish community in the world, this area hosts an exceptional society that runs without modern day conveniences. Electricity, TVs, automobiles, telephones and air conditioning are nonexistent in this culture. Numerous attractions such as shopping venues, buggy rides, bakeries and restaurants are located here to help provide visitors with a truly memorable experience. To respect the privacy and beliefs of the Amish community, please refrain from taking photos during your visit.

THURSDAY'S PLAZA. Constructed between 1892 and 1894 under the instruction of industrial icon J. Walter McClymonds, this Romanesque-style home stands as a splendid example of historical perfection. Listed on the Register of Historic Places, the outside of the grand structure still proudly exhibits intricate stone carvings, an extravagant entrance, several immense chimneys and a corner tower. Tours of the interior emphasize easy-to-miss bits of information regarding secret hiding places and introduce guests to the opulent ballroom and billiard room made with meticulously selected Moroccan leather. Tour reservations are recommended as the Massillon Woman's Club occupies the establishment.

DOWNTOWN. Established in 1926, the lovely Palace Theatre was created as a movie house/vaudeville. Thanks to a rescue and renovation effort that took place in the 1980s and 1990s, this beautiful establishment continues to host a variety of events from live stage acts to lectures and modern films. Guests enjoy the stage, with its elaborate columned proscenium and colors that resemble the original ornamentation.

DOWNTOWN. Dating to the early 1900s, this impressive structure served as home to Colonel William Henry Morgan and his family. The interior of the castle has been meticulously decorated with a careful blend of Italian Renaissance, Louis XV, Japanese and Elizabethan styles. Silk tapestries, carved wood and bronze balustrades are all details incorporated in the overall decor. In 1978, after changing ownership several times through the year, the structure now houses the Alliance City Schools Administration. Many of its original features have been preserved, and one hour tours are available only on Fridays from 1:00-2:00 or 2:00-3:00. Group tours can be arranged by contacting the administration building at 330-821-2100.
