Williamsburg
City Overview
Population Williamsburg was founded in 1699 as the capital of the Virginia Colony, making it one of the oldest cities in the US. Today, Williamsburg is famous for its restored historic area, Colonial Williamsburg, and for the College of William and Mary, one of the country's oldest universities.
Williamsburg is located midway between Richmond and Norfolk, near I-64, on the Virginia Peninsula in the southeast corner of the state. It encompasses 9.2 square miles.
Williamsburg's economy centers around tourism, education and health care, and its largest employers include the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the College of William and Mary and the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.
Airports Norfolk International Airport (ORF) and Richmond International Airport (RIC) are both close enough (approximately 45 miles) to Williamsburg to be of use, but Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF) is your closest bet, as it is only 20 miles from the city center.
If you prefer to travel by train, Amtrak offers direct service to Williamsburg from several major East Coast cities.
If traveling by car, exits 227 through 242 off Interstate 64 will take you to the Historic Triangle, with exit 238 leading directly to Colonial Williamsburg and the downtown area.
Transportation Much of the Historic Area in Williamsburg is easily accessible by foot, so having your own transportation is not a necessity. If you prefer to have an automobile, several local rental companies will be happy to assist.
The Williamsburg Area Transport (WAT) bus system is also a viable transportation for citizens and visitors in Williamsburg, James City County and the Bruton District of York County. The maximum one-way fare is $1.50, and discounts are available for children, students, senior citizens and the disabled. Service hours are as follows:
Off Peak: Mon-Sat 6am-8pm
Peak (summer months): Mon-Sat 6am-10pm

News Resources
To keep up with current events in Williamsburg, newspapers are the best place to turn. The Virginia Gazette is Williamsburg's twice-weekly newspaper, and it has been going strong for over 270 years. The award-winning Gazette covers local news, sports, entertainment and opinion. It also publishes Williamsburg Magazine each month.
The College of William and Mary offers two publications, The Flat Hat and the DoG Street Journal. The Flat Hat is a twice-weekly student newspaper that printed its first issue in 1911, and the DSJ is the college's "only daily online paper and monthly news magazine." It can be found at http://www.dogstreetjournal.com.

Tipping Standards Although tipping is not required, it's expected in industries like food service, hospitality and transportation. A waiter or waitress, taxi driver or room service attendant should be tipped 15-20% for good service. Keep in mind that many restaurants add a gratuity to bills for large parties, so be sure to review your receipt before leaving a tip. A $1 to $3 tip is appropriate for a housekeeper, doorman or bellhop for good service; a concierge who offers assistance beyond directions, such as finding tickets or dinner reservations, deserves a $5 tip.
