About Decorah

To understand Decorah one must understand the history of the immigrants that first settled here in 1849. A small number of Irish farmers ventured to the area, but the majority of Decorah's early settlers were Norwegians, and the 8,000 current residents of this small midwestern city have not forgotten their heritage. The hale and hearty settlers were farmers and businesspeople that embraced hard work, and the sometimes-harsh climate of the Iowa Bluff country. Not deterred by the remote location of Decorah, Luther College was founded in 1861 when the town was a mere 12 years old. Students were able to get a quality post-secondary education, steeped in traditional Lutheran values, without ever leaving town. In 1874 a Norwegian language newspaper, Decorah Posten, was established to keep non-English speakers up-to-date on local and national happenings. The Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum opened its doors in 1877. Its thirteen historic buildings and displays of furniture and traditional costumes give it the distinction of being the nation's largest museum devoted to a single ethnic group. Each July the entire town gears up for the Nordic Festival, complete with Scandinavian foods, Nordic games, dancing and storytelling.

Did you know?

Like their Norwegian ancestors, residents of Decorah enjoy the great outdoors. The city has a comprehensive parks system with hiking trails, municipal bike trails and plenty of opportunities for kayaking and canoeing. In fact, National Geographic Explorer Magazine ranked canoeing on the nearby Upper Iowa River as one of the "World's Top 100 Adventures."
