- University of Central Arkansas
A couple of fun and interesting facts about the University of Central Arkansas explain the origin of its school colors and its mascot. In 1908, W.O Wilson and Ida Waldran were charged by President Doyne with the task of choosing the new school's colors. The pair looked to their own clothing for inspiration and settled upon the gray of Wilson's sweater and the purple of Waldran's scarf, complimentary colors that they deemed suitable. Today, those colors can be seen throughout the school and in the sports uniforms of UCA. The school mascot came long after the school colors. It wasn't until 1920 that the school teams were designated the "Bears" in part due to Arkansas' nickname, the "Bear State."
