About Columbus
As it was 200 years ago, Columbus is first and foremost, a river town! Founded in 1828 on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, it served as an important connector between the southern plantations and the international cotton industry. Bringing American dreams to fruition, it is the birthplace of the formula for Coca Cola and was home to RC Cola until the 1960's. Ideally located between the intersection of five major highways, it is the third largest city in Georgia. Southern hospitality is alive and well, it's "just the way we are down here."
Did you know?
Coke, anyone? The cottage at 11 West Seventh Street was occupied by Dr. John Pemberton, the originator of the formula for Coca-Cola. After the War Between the States, Pemberton moved to Atlanta and died there in 1888. He is buried in Columbus' Linwood Cemetery. The cottage serves as a house museum and an adjoining kitchen houses coke memorabilia.
