About Columbia

The "Heart of the South" is a compelling mix of charm, history and dynamism. A center for academia and business, it's also the state's government hub. From the Governor's Green to the SC State Museum. The State House Library to the Supreme Court. If it gets too hot, take a stroll through Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Or go boating, swimming and fishing on Lake Murray, a 50,000-acre water playground. Columbia's home to antebellum mansions and Fort Jackson, the Army's largest training center.

Did you know?

Although it remained unscathed for most of the Civil War, Columbia fell to union troops in February 1865. Much of the city was burned, and today bronze stars mark the places where Union cannonballs scarred the State Capitol.
